The root of the mitzvah

A person should recognise the good done to him and repay kindness to whoever has been good to him, and not be ungrateful, for that is a wicked trait in the eyes of God and people. Father and mother are the reason he is in the world, and they toiled over him greatly in his childhood, so it is right that he honour and revere them. And once this trait is fixed in his soul, he will rise from it to recognise the goodness of God, the cause of his existence and of all his ancestors, and understand how careful he must be in His service.
