Exodus 35:3

The root of the mitzvah

God wanted to honour the day of Shabbat so that everyone would find rest on it, even sinners and the condemned. It is like a great king who invited the whole land to a feast and shut the door to no one, and only after the day of the feast sat in judgment. This too is part of the honour of Shabbat, which we were commanded to sanctify and honour for our own good and merit.
