The root of the mitzvah

All the mitzvot were given only so that God may do good to us, and a person becomes worthy of that good through his deeds, for the heart follows the deeds. So the House was not built for God's need - the heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain Him - but to prepare our hearts for His service. We were commanded to set apart a place of utmost purity, where people's thoughts would be purified and their hearts set right, and through good deeds and pure thought there our minds would rise to cleave to God.
