The root of the mitzvah

A light burning in the Temple adds to the honour and splendour of the House in the eyes of those who see it, just as people honour their own homes with lit lamps. And all the glorifying of the House is meant to bring awe and humility into a person's heart when he sees it, for the soul is refined by good deeds.
